Ed,
Good points.
Corporations have taken control of the entire American(and by extension) Global Economy.
There is very little Ordinary Citizens can do about it today.
We could rebel but there is only so much ur rebellion will achieve.
We have become little more than Slaves to do the Corporations bidding today.

Ashish.
Phoenix,
I don't know about u but this kind of news amongst the Intelligestia(relatively more aware crowd) means the losses must be even worse amongst those that are not fully clued in to the Internet.
Its beyond Frightening .
The facts of the matter have not changed much. Its become much easier today for Hackers to break in and take whatever data they want today.
The way I look at it-Ensure as little Personal Data as is possible is exposed to outside/external players in a way which they can exploit it for their Financial Needs.
Regards
Ashish.
We had no losses. The bank covered all the fraudulent charges.
Of course, if we hadn't been checking our statements every month we would have gotten some mushroom treatment.
It looks like these financial institutions are treating their customers like mushroom: Keep them in the dark and cover them with shxx

It seems to me that almost all of us commenting on this thread have suffered some kind of a credit card theft. We had a false HSBC credit card payment for a purchase we had not made. So it looks like this is a very common occurrence. Now that's alarming.
As RFID and nearfield communication devices become more popular I wonder if it will make it easier for this kind of personal data to be stolen, and if so, what will the impact be on the consumer and will that be enough to prompt lawmakers to take up the cause.
We had fraudulent charges on our card from one of the credit reporting agencies.
Someone else had set up a reoccurring charge and billed it to our account. When I spoke with the credit card representative, she knew right away this charge was fraudulent - why would I be paying for a credit monitoring service for a totally unrelated person?
For privacy reasons - she couldn't tell me anything about the person who's credit reports were being charged to our account - not even a name. This was so frustrating.
Afterwards, I realized that that person could have been just a second victim of the same thief that was trying to take my money.

You should, but as per usual, the system protects corporations, not individuals. Someone would have to show damage to get legislators to act and, because this whole area is so nebulous, it would be difficult to know where an attack came from.
Sony's Playstation apparently suffered one of the biggest attacks. 77 million users.
New regulation needed?

This makes me wonder if we need a new regulation that would require a consumer to be informed when his data has been compromised. I wonder what information besides your credit card number was taken? What if you had multiple cards registered? I would think you have a right to know.
